What is insomnia ?

You’re lying awake again, wondering why you can’t sleep. You’ve tried counting sheep, you’ve tried everything else, and still — nothing. If you’re constantly asking yourself why you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep, you may be dealing with insomnia, one of the most common sleep problems we treat at Zen Minds Psychiatry.

Insomnia isn’t just a bad night here and there. It’s a sleep disorder that makes it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or get back to sleep once you wake — and it can leave you exhausted, foggy, and dreading bedtime itself. It’s diagnosed when trouble sleeping happens at least three nights a week for three months or more, and it’s affecting your daytime functioning. The good news: insomnia treatment works, and it’s more accessible than most people realize.

Chronic insomnia is different from the occasional restless night everyone has — it’s persistent, and it usually needs a real treatment plan, not just willpower.

Why choose Zen Minds for insomnia treatment

Insomnia Remedies & Self-Care

What actually helps at home

While professional treatment is the most reliable path to lasting relief, these habits support it in between visits:

These habits support treatment but rarely resolve severe or chronic insomnia on their own — which is why a proper evaluation matters once trouble sleeping has become a nightly pattern.

What Causes Insomnia

Rarely just one thing

Because the cause varies so much person to person, our evaluation focuses on identifying yours rather than applying a blanket protocol.

Stress & anxiety

Racing thoughts at night that keep the mind from winding down

Overlapping disorders

Conditions like sleep apnea that disrupt sleep independently

Depression & mood

Mental health conditions that commonly travel with chronic insomnia

Medications

Certain prescriptions or medical conditions affecting sleep

Life changes

Travel, acute stress, or a transition — often behind short-term insomnia

How We Diagnose Insomnia

Every evaluation starts with a conversation

We start with a detailed conversation about your sleep history, mental health background, and daily habits. We may also use:

Sleep diaries

To track patterns over one to two weeks

Sleep apnea screening

Screening for related sleep disorders like sleep apnea

Mood assessment

For anxiety, depression, or other conditions that often travel with chronic insomnia

Sleep study referral

Polysomnography, when a physical sleep disorder is suspected

Insomnia Treatment Options

How to treat insomnia — our approach

There’s rarely a single cure, but there are highly effective, evidence-based insomnia therapies that work for the large majority of patients.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-I)

The clinically recommended, first-line treatment — a structured, short-term therapy addressing the habits and thoughts keeping you awake. Widely considered the most effective long-term option, without medication side effects.

Integrated psychiatric care

Because Dr. Chopra treats both sleep and mental health, we directly address anxiety, depression, or other conditions that are common insomnia causes — rather than referring you elsewhere.

Sleep hygiene & behavioral coaching

Practical, personalized strategies: consistent sleep-wake times, a wind-down routine, and adjustments tailored to your specific situation.

Medication management

For some patients, short-term or non-habit-forming medication, or melatonin, can help reset a disrupted sleep-wake cycle. We can also manage medication for any underlying condition affecting sleep.

Are You a College Student?

The Zen Minds Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program

Anxiety, ADHD, depression, and sleep struggles often surface during college — and campus counseling centers are booking one to two weeks out. Get seen in 5–7 business days, with care built specifically for college and graduate students.

We welcome referrals for medication management, ADHD evaluation, or sleep concerns outside your team’s scope — and with the student’s consent, we’ll stay in touch so nothing falls through the cracks.

Meet the founder

Dr. Amit Chopra, MD

Most Boston psychiatrists treat the mind. Dr. Amit Chopra treats the mind and the sleep behind it. A dual board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine specialist, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and practicing psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Chopra trained at the Mayo Clinic and has presented specifically on ADHD and sleep disorders in young adults to the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry.

He founded Zen Minds Psychiatry — and built the Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program specifically — because the students who need psychiatric care most are often the ones with the least time to wait for it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder involving persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — impacting daytime functioning. It differs from occasional sleeplessness in how often and how long it occurs.

Common insomnia causes include stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep habits, other sleep disorders like sleep apnea, and certain medications. A proper evaluation identifies your specific cause.

If you regularly experience trouble falling asleep, frequent waking, or waking too early — three or more nights a week for three months or longer — along with daytime fatigue, it’s worth getting evaluated.

The most effective treatment for insomnia is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), often combined with treatment for any underlying anxiety, depression, or other condition. Medication is used selectively, not as a default.

Many patients achieve long-term relief through CBT-I and treatment of underlying causes. Chronic insomnia tied to an ongoing condition may require continued management rather than a one-time cure.

Acute insomnia is short-term, often triggered by stress or a life change, and typically resolves on its own. Chronic insomnia persists for months and usually needs structured treatment.
