Boston's Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program

Most college counseling centers in the Boston area are booking new appointments one to two weeks out — and that’s the good case. The Zen Minds Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program gets new patients seen in 5–7 business days, from a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist who is also a board-certified sleep specialist — a combination almost no one else in Boston offers.

Problem College Section

College comes with real pressure — new independence, harder coursework, disrupted sleep schedules, and, for many students, the first time managing a mental health or sleep condition without a parent's support close by. Campus counseling centers do important work, but they're built for short-term support.

Nearly half of college counseling centers now serve more than 1,000 students per counselor

When you need ongoing medication management, a full ADHD evaluation, or a sleep issue looked at alongside your mental health, Zen Minds Psychiatry is here as your next step.

WHY THE WAIT EXISTS

It’s not you — it’s the math. Nationally, nearly half of college counseling centers now serve more than 1,000 students per counselor, well past what the field’s own standards call workable, and the average wait for a first appointment runs one to two weeks even before accounting for a busy stretch of the semester. Campus counseling centers do real, important work — they’re just not built to carry ongoing psychiatric medication management or a full ADHD and sleep evaluation on top of everything else they cover.

That’s the gap the Zen Minds Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program was built to close.

What we treat

Care built around student life

ADHD Evaluation & Treatment

Is this ADHD, or am I just exhausted?” We offer ADHD testing, assessment, and adult ADHD diagnosis for college students across Massachusetts — including evaluation and medication management. We also check whether sleep is affecting focus.

Anxiety & Panic Disorder Treatment

Racing thoughts before an exam, a panic attack out of nowhere, or social anxiety that makes a lecture hall unbearable — we evaluate where normal stress ends and a treatable anxiety or panic disorder begins. We also treat OCD and intrusive thoughts.

Depression & Mood Treatment

When motivation disappears or signs of depression won’t lift, our team offers depression evaluation, treatment, and medication management as a clear next step.

Sleep Medicine

Awake until 3am, or exhausted all day? As a sleep specialist, we evaluate insomnia, delayed sleep-wake phase, and daytime sleepiness — ordering a sleep study when needed.

REPEATED PROGRAM BADGE

THE 5–7 DAY ACCESS PROMISE — New patients in the Zen Minds Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program are typically seen within 5–7 business days — not the 1–2+ week wait that’s become standard at campus counseling centers across Massachusetts.

Meet the founder

Dr. Amit Chopra, MD

Most Boston psychiatrists treat the mind. Dr. Amit Chopra treats the mind and the sleep behind it. A dual board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine specialist, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and practicing psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Chopra trained at the Mayo Clinic and has presented specifically on ADHD and sleep disorders in young adults to the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry.

He founded Zen Minds Psychiatry — and built the Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program specifically — because the students who need psychiatric care most are often the ones with the least time to wait for it.

Q1. How long will I actually have to wait for an appointment?

New patients in the Student Psychiatry & Sleep Program are typically seen within 5–7 business days — well under the 1–2+ week average wait at most campus counseling centers.

You can schedule with Zen Minds directly without a referral. If you’d like, and with your permission, we can also coordinate with your campus counselor once you’re established with us.

Because they’re rarely separate problems. Poor sleep can look like or worsen ADHD, anxiety, and depression — and psychiatric medications can affect sleep. Dr. Chopra is board-certified in both, so your evaluation covers both from the start instead of treating one and referring out the other.

Telehealth appointments are available anywhere in Massachusetts, so care doesn’t have to pause when you leave campus. For time outside the state, we can talk through options during your visit.

Yes. Since sleep issues and ADHD symptoms often overlap, we evaluate both together instead of treating one and referring the other out.
